3 Keys to Building a Great Friendship

1. Look for an admirable person.

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan

became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as

himself.

1 Samuel 18:1

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a

companion of fools suffers harm.

Proverbs 13:20

2. Give space for your friend to grow.

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because

he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe

he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his

tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

1 Samuel 18:3-4

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift

you up.

James 4:10

3. Have your friend’s back.

Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and

said to him, “Let not the king do wrong to his servant

David; he has not wronged you, and what he has

done has benefited you greatly.”

1 Samuel 19:4

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a

time of adversity.
